“Frankly Speaking” Go Kyung-Pyo gets electrocuted and becomes a person incapable of telling lies.
On May 1, the first episode of the JTBC drama “Frankly Speaking” premiered.
The first episode revealed the true identity of Song Ki-Baek (played by Go Kyung-Pyo), who is known as a successful announcer without any regrets.
His turbulent day, which began with arriving at work two hours early to help Team Leader Kim’s (Jo Han-Chul) son film his work experience, culminated in the revelation of an affair with his co-anchor.
Her husband bursts into the newsroom, shouting that “Men On The Run’s” MC Kim Sung-Hoon (Kim Won-Hoon) is a family wrecker for cheating on his wife.
As Song Ki-Baek tries to wrap up the news, he is grabbed by the husband, who continues to call Kim Sung-Hoon a home wrecker.
He has to write a letter to Team Leader Kim, who blames him for the situation, even though it wasn’t his fault.
He had a dream and a goal to become the first male anchor to be the main announcer, which is why he studied foreign languages and practiced correct pronunciation until his textbooks were tattered.
What’s more, when he was informed that his boss valued the anchor’s reputation within the company, he suddenly became a “time-consuming yes-man” who never said “no” to his seniors’ requests for “dubbing” or “being on call.”
However, there was one person who was on Song Ki-Baek’s radar: entertainment writer On Woo-Joo (played by Kang Han-Na).
Faced with the prospect of canceling the program due to the MC’s infidelity scandal, she had to find a performer to keep the show alive.
To her, Ki-Baek, an interesting ‘character’ she had never seen in entertainment, was like a new world.
Woo-Joo succeeds in convincing him to join the variety show, despite his insistence on being the news announcer.
But Song Ki-baek is an ignoramus who doesn’t know a thing about variety entertainment and does his best to do his job like a documentary.
He has studied dodgeball, the sport of the day, from books, but he doesn’t care about the sponsored products and even has to study entertainment separately when he unprovoked attacks the face of popular idol PN (Jang Won-Hyuk), who is supposed to be the main focus of the camera.
Then, an accident happened.
Song Ki-baek didn’t see the ‘high voltage caution’ warning sign and got an electric shock.
Luckily, he was unharmed, but now he could not lie even if wanted to.
His first target is PN, an idol who had been bullying the staff with a lot of verbal abuse, and when he ignored the youngest writer from Woo Joo’s team and shoved him, Song Ki-Baek lost it.
Song Ki-Baek grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and said, “Everyone here is here to do their job. No one is here to be bullied by you. You’re only successful because people love you, and if you’re not grateful to them, you’ll surely fail as a person.”
He then said, “Just one slap on the face from me, and you will turn over a new leaf,” and was about to slap him when the Woo Joo flew in from nowhere and stopped him.
When he regained his senses, he could not believe what he had done and kept on repeating, “It’s not me.”
“Frankly Speaking” airs every Wednesday-Thursday on JTBC. Viewers can watch the Korean drama on Netflix with English subs.
