“The Atypical Family” is a fantasy romance that tells the story of the family of Bok Gwi-Joo (Jang Ki-Yong), who has lost his superpowers due to a modern-day illness, and Do Da-Hae (Chun Woo-Hee), a woman who becomes fatefully intertwined.

“The Atypical Family” is a fantasy romance drama about a man with extraordinary abilities who has never been able to save anyone, but finally saves the woman of his dreams.

It premieres on 4 April at 10.30 pm.

The male lead, Jang Ki-Yong, plays the role of Bok Gwi-Joo, a man who has extraordinary abilities but has never been able to save anyone.

The K-drama marks Jang Ki-Yong’s comeback after three years.

When asked why he chose “The Atypical Family” as his comeback project, Jang Ki-Yong said, “The script was the most interesting, and the composition of the hero’s family and characters were interesting. I also had the excitement of being able to show a performance that even I couldn’t imagine,” he explains, joking, “The fact that it’s a comeback project and my name is called ‘Comeback Joo,’ there was a strong pull.”

“Chun Woo-Hee is an actress I’ve always wanted to work with,” he said of his co-star, “Our drama is sweet, sad, but most of all, it’s affectionate. We had a lot of fun filming.”

Chun Woo-Hee plays Do Da-Hae, a mysterious woman who appears in front of the family of Bok Gwi Joo who has lost his superpowers.

“When it was first announced that we were cast, I think there were some people around us who said, ‘You two?’ But I thought it would be fresh to see us together,” Chun Woo-Hee said of her acting partnership with Jang Ki-Yong.

She adds, “For Jang Ki-Yong, it’s his comeback after three years, and I haven’t done many melodramas like this. We encouraged each other and relied on each other, and it worked well, and there’s a weird sense of chemistry between us, which I think was captured well on screen.” she said.

In the drama, Kim Soo-Hyun plays Bok Dong-Hee, the older sister of Jang Ki-Yong, who worked as a model in her 20s but lost her ability to fly after retiring due to her heavy body.

To portray her character’s huge figure, Kim Soo-Hyun had to wear special make-up, which took seven to eight hours each time.

“All of my previous roles have been scary, but the character of Bok Dong-Hee has a bright and human side, and I was surprised and excited that the director thought of me for this role. I was drawn to it because I thought I could break the stereotypes,” she explained.

“I want to earn the title of ‘girl crush’ through this drama,” she said, adding, “The chemistry between the girls in the drama is also good. Please look forward to it.”

Director Cho Hyun-Taek said about the drama, “As you can feel from the title, the main characters were heroes in the past, but not now. It’s a story about struggling to regain the superpowers they had when they were heroes in the past.” “It’s comical, sad, and sometimes even poignant. It’s also a story about love and family.”

The viewing point is the irony that arises at the point where fantasy and reality collide. “It’s a very realistic hero drama that’s different from the hero drama we’re used to. It’s a drama where fantasy and reality keep colliding. We tried to show the fantasy as very real and the reality as fantasy, and the sincerity of each actor was well captured in their characters. Please watch the sincerity and energy emanating from them.”

“The Atypical Family” will premiere on the 4th of May at 10.30 pm.
