The news that actor Im Si Wan has been chosen to play one of the lead roles in ‘Squid Game 2’ has left all parties tight-lipped and on high alert.
On the 15th, a Netflix representative told iMBC Entertainment, “We can’t confirm whether Im Siwan will appear in ‘Squid Game 2’ or not.” His agency, Plum A&C, also said, “We cannot confirm,” without changing the subject.
On the same day, a news report based on an exclusive coverage, said that Im Siwan will appear as the main character of “Squid Game” Season 2. He joins Lee Jung Jae and Lee Byung Hun in the official cast lineup that has been announced so far.
“Squid Game” was a huge hit and worldwide success when it premiered last season. Viewers around the world loved the show and it has been renewed for a second season. The total production cost for season 2 is reportedly over 100 billion won.
It is customary for media outlets to report exclusively on the casting of new actors. The media tries to satisfy the public’s curiosity, and the agencies, production companies, and broadcasters that respond to them tend to give a response: under review, positive review, one of the proposals, or not true.
Netflix and Siwan were different. They took the unusual position of saying they couldn’t confirm anything. They chose an embarrassing silence as their de facto official stance. It’s a sign that they’re more interested in promoting their own content on their own terms and on their own schedule than in their viewers’ right to know.
